In 2008, manufacturers and merchant wholesalers relied more heavily on e-commerce than on brick and mortar retailers or selected service businesses. Retailers’ e-commerce sales increased by 3.3 percent in 2008. E-commerce sales were 3.6 (or $142 billion) up from 3.4 percent (or $137 billion) in 2007. In manufacturing for 2008, e-commerce accounted for 39 percent of total shipments, up for the seventh year in a row.
