Ecommerce
grew faster in 2008 than total economic activity in three of the four major economic sectors monitored by the United States government. In 2008, manufacturers and merchant wholesalers relied more heavily on e-commerce than on brick and mortar retailers or selected service businesses. Retailers’ e-commerce sales increased by 3.3 percent in 2008. E-commerce sales were 3.6 (or $142 billion) up from 3.4 percent (or $137 billion) in 2007. In manufacturing for 2008, e-commerce accounted for 39 percent of total shipments, up for the seventh year in a row.
